Zadar is the ancient capital of Dalmatia trading with Phoenicians, Etruscans, Ancient Greeks; conquered by Romans in 2nd C BC; became part of the Ostrogothic kingdom in 481 AD; then the Byzantine Empire in 553; attacked by the Venetians and the armies of the Fourth Crusade; sold to Venice in 1409; attacked by the Ottomans in 16th and 17th C; passed to the Austrian crown in 1797; then to the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy and back to the Austrian monarchy in 1815; then Italian military forces seized control after WWI and yet again during WWII; rebuilt during post war Yugoslavia; shelled and isolated during the Croatian War of Independence (1991-95). In short, Zadar is a fascinating city both modern and ancient and featuring architecture of all periods including modern public art exhibits such as the Sea Organ and the Greeting to the Sun.
