In the late 1950s a freight train derailed near the banks of the Cheakamus River just past Function Junction south of Whistler village. The derailed boxcars were deemed too expensive to recover so they were abandoned where they lay. Over the years the forest grew amongst the scattered cars and later biking enthusiasts used the cars as platforms for extreme jumps and later still gifted graffiti artists used the exterior and interior of the cars as their canvass. The colourful art coupled with the mottled light streaming through the forest make the wreck a photographer's must-do. In addition the short hike to the wreck provides excellent views of the Cheakamus River as it crashes through sections of canyon. Note that access to the wreck requires walking (illegally) beside the track for short distances. For more details about the wreck and access issues see: 'Train Wreck' access under review.
