Girona is an old town in NE Catalonia easily reached by train from Barcelona. Arriving early it's a serene place, and then the bus tourists arrive crowding the narrow, ancient streets, filling cafés and shops. Then they leave and Girona becomes quiet again. Iberians, Romans, Visigoths, Charlemagne, Moors, Jews, Spanish, and Napoleonic troops have shaped Girona’s history. Today it is steepd in Catalonian politics. A walk along the reconstructed city walls – the Passeig de la Muralla – is a highlight for any visitor.
