The unique occurrence of the full moon at perigee during a lunar eclipse on a cloudless evening caused more than the usual crowds to accumulate at choice viewing points. We decided to go up Cypress Mountain on the lookout that offers grand views of the Fraser Valley, Mount Baker, Vancouver, and the ocean toward Vancouver Island. All great except for one miscalculation: the eastern horizon where the moon would rise at eclipse was obscured by trees. Once the moon rose high enough above the trees the view was good no matter where one was located. And then there is the issue of photographing the dim moon without a massive telephoto or a telescope: the poor moon is just a blurry speck.
