On a blue sky winter day Needle Peak (accessed via the Coquihalla highway) is a fine destination for a snowshoe hike despite the long drive. Above the tree line the views of the Cascade and Coast mountains sweep across a 360 degree panorama. This area is known for its wind but today all is calm so we linger for a longer lunch before descending back to the highway and observe a rainbow in the fog rising above the valley. Seeing the rainbow and shadows we muse on the "Brocken spectre" phenomenon: a magnified shadow of an observer, cast upon the upper surfaces of clouds opposite the sun (German Brockengespenst).
