Dave likes to dream big. He has wanted to hike the volcanic landscape of Mt Edziza Provincial Park in northern British Columbia for some years and when he purchased a SPOT GPS device and reserved a room at the Tatogga Lake Resort and also booked a float plane to get to the park I realized that his dream would become our reality. So we collected our backpacking gear and pointed the car north for a two day 1700 km journey to Tatogga Lake. Our original intention was to hike from Little Ball Lake in the southern part of the park and hike north to Buckley Lake. But on our day of departure it rained (and rained) preventing the float plane from flying. However, on Sun July 26 the weather improved sufficiently to allow the pilot to get us to Buckley Lake. We would then do a 10 day hike into the park returning to Buckley Lake where the pilot would fly us back to Tatogga Lake. Despite the change in plans and the moody Edziza weather this trip is the best backpacking adventure we have ever had. The Edziza region is unique – with a volcanic eruption as recently as 1300 years ago – and spectacular in every respect. Oh, the float plane did not show up on our scheduled day of departure. It arrived on the next day so our adventure totaled 11 days in the park.
